The
Parks / Québec
/ Mingan
Archipelago National Park
|
The environment here, from
peat bogs to salt marshes, in a very small area
(150 square kilometres) supports more than 450
species of plants including 100 considered rare,
endangered or usually expected to grow great
distances away. The Mingan Thistle, for example,
is an arctic alpine plant and, in Eastern Canada,
the 200 that exist are all found in the park.
Many plants' very survival is a challenge
to Nature's ingenuity. The saxifrages manage
to survive clinging to the tiny cracks in the
cliffs' rock face. The Oyster Leaf with its
luminous blue flowers protects its outer leaves
from salt and sun with a powdery dust and the
Seabeach Senecio is well covered with a hairy
down.
