Bay Islands National Park

These smooth whale-backed
islands were once mountains taller than our
present-day Rockies. Millions of years of building
and erosion created mineral layers of pink,
black and white crystal now exposed as wavy
patterns of colour in the rocks. A great tropical
sea lapped against these mountains for 200 million
years ultimately leaving the fossilized shells
of sea mollusks, corals and crustaceans embedded
in limestone on the sea's floor. The popular
caves and flowerpots that draw tourists
to Flowerpot Island are excellent examples of
the effects of erosion on limestone.
