Bay Islands National Park
|
Lying along the southwestern
edge of the Precambrian Shield, the islands
form a natural transition zone where the deciduous
forests to the south, made up of sugar maples,
beech and elm, aflame with colour each fall,
intermingle with the boreal forests to the north.
The lack of soil and rugged terrain in the northern
half of the park can support only hardy lichens,
junipers, red oak, and the wind-swept white
pine that inspired the imagination of the Group
of Seven and has become a symbol for the craggy
island
