The Parks / Ontario / Georgian Bay Islands National Park

This timid and generally misunderstood creature has become another species seriously endangered by human habitation. The 50 -70 cm. adult can be recognized by its blunt tail ending in a rattle, triangular head and brown markings on its heavy tan body. Encountered on the trail, it exhibits an aversion for humans and often does not respond with its characteristic warning before disappearing into marsh or forest. Their venom is, however, poisonous and park staff regularly re-locate snakes to areas unpopulated by uneasy vacationers.
