Nogait National Park

The interior of the park was
once used by the prehistoric Thule Inuit who
fished and hunted caribou along the Hornaday
and Brock River valleys. Archeological sites
include the food caches and caribou fences of
the ancient Inuvialuit ancestors. In 1771, the
first European on the Arctic coast, Samuel Hearne,
came to look for copper deposits. Between 1821
and 1852, the British sent explorers into the
Arctic in search of the Northwest Passage. One
famous expedition, led by Sir John Franklin,
was subsequently lost. Whalers entered the area
after 1900 followed by missionaries, the Northwest
Mounted Police and the inevitable fur traders.
